A documentary dedicated to Vincenzo Nibali, the ‘Shark of the Strait’ who made Italian cycling history.
On air Monday 20 May at 14:00 on Rai Due.
After eighteen seasons as a professional and ten in the youth categories, Vincenzo Nibali ended his extraordinary career at the Giro di Lombardia in October 2022. At a time when competition was quite fierce, Vincenzo was the strongest Italian cyclist of modern times and one of the strongest cyclists at international level, entering history for being one of only seven cyclists in the world to have won all three Grand Tours, and one of only four to have won at least two ‘monumental classics’: the Giro di Lombardia in 2015 and 2017 and the Milano-Sanremo in 2018.
With an incredible career behind him, Nibali decides to go for a ride in his native Sicily, which will not be touched by the Giro d’Italia this year. This is how he created the ‘Giro Nibali’, involving friends and family, adults and children, in the discovery of Sicily, but also of his passion for cycling. In this journey through natural beauty and breathtaking landscapes, Nibali retraces his life and his extraordinary victories, being one of the seven cyclists to have won at least one edition of the three biggest European stage races: Giro d’Italia, Tour de France and Vuelta a España. And so the journey to Sicily becomes the story of the identity memory of a great cyclist, but also of the great history of the Giro d’Italia.
‘Vincenzo Nibali – Il 7° campione’, a Red Carpet production in collaboration with Rai Documentari and with Vincit Consulting SAGL and A&J All Sports, broadcast on Monday 20 May at 2pm on Rai Due, tells the story of the greatness of a unique athlete, to be remembered for generations.
The documentary is a visual, dynamic and cinematographic tale that through breathtaking images, exclusive interviews and direct testimonies will take us into the world of the Italian cyclist, from his childhood to his great victories, recounting the world of cycling from an unprecedented and exciting point of view.
Rai Documentari pays tribute to the ‘Shark of the Strait’, who became the seventh champion in the history of world cycling. A champion who made simplicity his strength and was able to capture the spirit of his land, Sicily, which he left as a young boy to pursue his dream, but which he always carries in his heart.
